Week 6 RSL Roundup

This week so an exciting return to action in the USA Rugby Super League. With as many as a dozen clubs in the playoff hunt, many of which were fighting for places with each other, week 6 had the makings of scintillating rugby action.

With 5 of the 6 clubs in the playoff hunt playing in the Red Conference, every single match was important. The most notable was San Francisco Golden Gate beating Belmont Shore away at 27-17. SFGG had to take this victory and they did in fine style, taking down Belmont Shore and denying them a bonus point in the process, drawing the Conference even closer.

Denver saw off Santa Monica at home, with flyhalf, Link Wilfley converted 4 of 5 tries and added a penalty kick to help them to victory. In this, Denver  has pulled ahead of Belmont Shore, retaking their place at the top of the Conference.

OMBAC also staked their claim for the title, with a 45-17 road win over Old Puget; Todd Clever and Tui Osborne took two tries apiece, making it so only five points separate the 1st and 5th place clubs in the Red Conference ensuring this race will be contested right down to the wire.

This coming weekend will see Santa Monica host Belmont Shore, and both teams know they have to win it. Belmont Shore may be able to sponge a loss if the cards fall right in the rest of the games, but following their last match against OMBAC, this isn’t the situation they’ll be relishing. As for OMBAC, they host the  Denver Barbarians in another tense matchup, with a win by Denver  almost sealing up the conference for them.

After their big win, SFGG will host Old Puget and will not want their momentum to be stopped. Both a win and a bonus point will keep their playoff hopes alive, but the math is pretty simple for each of these clubs. Win your last two matches and you’ll book yourself a spot in the playoffs. Unfortunately, with the conference as tied up as it is, they are all playing each other and someone has to get their heartbroken.
